About Geotate

Geotate is an Independent Software Vendor providing users and applications with the ability to find their location — where they are, and where they've been. Geotate is a geo software company whose solutions enable portable devices to automatically add a geotag to an object without compromising the user experience and the devices' resources. Geotate’s patented approach captures raw GPS satellite signals in the available memory that are later unlocked via a web-based service. This disruptive technology enables instant, intuitive “auto geotagging”.

Geotate is the leading company in software GPS technology. In this revolutionary approach the signals from GPS satellites are processed flexibly in software, rather than the conventional approach using a dedicated hardware processor. This technology was developed by the team in Philips Research in a new research programme starting in 2000, and was demonstrated successfully at 3GSM Barcelona in 2003. The first product “Spot” was created for PC applications by Philips Software (latterly NXP Software), supporting fully autonomous GPS location and navigation, and was launched in 2006. Since then it has been included in a number of accessories, and integrated into laptops.

The applications and technology concepts were developed further, and the new Capture and Process system was shown by the team at PMA Las Vegas in 2007. With its instant capture and storage of the GPS signals, and then the later processing when convenient, the system is designed for and well suited to camera “point and shoot” applications.

To create the most of the market and technology opportunities that this new approach presented, the new company Geotate BV was formed as a Joint Venture between the Road Group and NXP in March 2008.
